Games with a Nemesis system: what exists, and why the list is short

The honest answer first: no game has replicated the Nemesis system, and one big reason is legal. Warner Bros. filed a patent on the system in 2016 and was granted it in February 2021 (US Patent 10,926,179 — "Nemesis characters, nemesis forts, social vendettas and followers in computer games"), with a reported expiry in August 2036. Between the patent and the sheer production cost of the original, the industry mostly walked away. What you'll find instead are games that capture pieces of it — and, more recently, a different genre quietly delivering the core feeling by other means. Here's the map.
What the Nemesis system actually was
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (2014) and Shadow of War (2017) gave procedurally generated orc captains persistent memory of their encounters with you. The grunt who got a lucky kill was promoted, remembered how he beat you, taunted you about it in the rematch, and carried the scars you gave him. Rivalries escalated, betrayals happened mid-battle, dominated orcs could flip sides. Strip away the orcs and the system is one idea: NPCs whose state persists and accumulates history with you specifically, so the stories are yours rather than authored. That's why "my nemesis" became a thing players said about a specific procedurally generated character — a sentence no other 2014 game could produce.

The pattern across all of them: persistence is shallow (a rank, a return-visit flag) compared to Monolith's remembered how we fought. The patent covers the specific machinery — the hierarchies, forts, and vendetta structures — which is why studios orbit the idea without landing on it.
Where the idea actually went
Here's the part most nemesis listicles miss: the core craving the system satisfied — a character in the game that remembers your shared history — didn't die with the patent. It moved genres. The Nemesis system pointed memory at enemies; the companion genre points it at allies. And ironically, the ally version can now go deeper than Monolith's, because modern AI companions don't just track "beat you twice, scarred by fire" — they store open-ended memories of what you actually did together and retrieve them in conversation. Enemy memory vs ally memory
One design truth explains why the ally version is winning: memory attached to enemies is spice, but memory attached to an ally is a relationship. An orc who remembers killing you makes a great anecdote; a companion who remembers the week you didn't log in makes a bond.
